Mel Tucker was born on January 4, 1972, in Cleveland, Ohio. He is the son of Melvin Tucker Sr. and Shirley Tucker. His father was a high school football coach and his mother was also a stay-at-home mom.
Mel Tucker attended Cleveland Heights High School, where he was a standout football player. He was named the Ohio Mr. Football in 1990.
After high school, Mel Tucker played college football at the University of Wisconsin. He was a two-year starter at safety and was also named All-Big Ten Conference in 1993.
After college, Mel Tucker began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wisconsin. He then spent two seasons as a defensive backs coach at the University of California, Berkeley.
He spent five seasons at South Carolina, and during that time the Gamecocks won two SEC championships.
In 2002, Mel Tucker was hired as the head coach at the University of Colorado. He spent four seasons at Colorado, and during that time the Buffaloes went 23-29.
