Jill Tracy Jacobs Biden is an American educator and philanthropist who has served as the First Lady of the United States since 2021. She is the first First Lady to have a doctorate degree and to have maintained her career outside the White House.
Early Life and Education
Jill Biden was born in Hammonton, New Jersey, on June 3, 1951. She is the daughter of Donald and Bonny Jacobs. She graduated from Brandywine High School in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1969. Jill then attended the University of Delaware, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education in 1975. She also met her future husband, Joe Biden, while at the University of Delaware.
Career in Education
After graduating from college, Jill Biden taught English at a community college in Delaware. She then went on to earn a master’s degree in education from Villanova University in 1981. She continued to teach at the community college level, and she also worked as a teacher’s aide in the public schools. In 2007, she earned a doctorate degree in education from the University of Delaware.

When her husband was elected vice president in 2009, Jill Biden became the Second Lady of the United States. She continued to teach as Second Lady, making her the first presidential spouse to do so. She also founded the Joining Forces initiative, which promotes the economic security of military families.
