When asked about his alleged involvement in a plot to have the current Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, removed from office, Superintendent George Asare testified before a parliamentary committee.
He told the committee that he was getting ready to wear a white dress to celebrate the appointment of COP George Alex Mensah as the new IGP.
He explained that his decision to prepare his white dress, which is symbolic of celebration in the black community, was motivated by an assurance given to him and COP Mensah by Chief Bugri Naabu, a former Northern Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He claimed that Mr. Mensah was a good police commissioner who was adored by many police officers and that giving him the top position in the police profession would have sparked a great deal of excitement among the officers.
After meeting Chief Bugri Naabu, Superintendent Asare explained the reasoning behind his decision to create a white dress.
On Monday, September 4, 2023, when he appeared before the Committee, he provided the justification.
One of the people heard on tape arguing for the ouster of IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare is Superintendent Asare.
Following the public disclosure of the private recording of the conversation between Daniel Bugri Naabu, Superintendent Asare, and COP Mensah, Parliament established a committee to look into the matter.
Samuel Atta-Akyea, a representative for Abuakwa South, serves as the committee’s chair.
The panel’s mandate is to look into both the veracity of the tape that was leaked and the complex allegations that have drawn widespread attention.
Relatively, COP George Alex Mensah also claimed that the Inspector General of Police has gagged everyone in the service and no one is able to rise up against his ills.
He alleged that even the Public Affairs Directorate which is supposed to be the mouthpiece of the service has been suppressed since he assumed office challenging committee members to investigate the matter for themselves.
