The Director of Operations of the Ghana Police Service, COP George Alex Mensah, has claimed that he never got promoted under the largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) regime.
COP Mensah made this revelation when he appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Thursday, August 31, probing into the alleged plot to remove Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare.
According to COP Mensah, he only got promoted to the officer of the Police Commissioner under President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Previously, COP Mensah was serving as the Assistant Superintendent while the current IGP Dampare was serving as a Sergent in the police service.
COP George Alex Mensah has acknowledged that he supports the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which is in power.
He has, however, refuted claims that he is an NPP registered member.
The senior officer, who is currently on leave and getting ready to retire, also acknowledged that he had spoken to Justine Kodua, the general secretary of the NPP, and warned him that if he did not take precautions, the party might return to opposition.
However, he claimed that Dr. George Akuffo Dampare is mismanaging the police force. He also denied claims that there was animosity between him and the current IGP.
“Dampare is not managing the Police Service well and the majority of police officers are not happy. You can call the police officers underground and they will tell you,” COP Mensah told the committee on Thursday, August 31.
COP Mensah testified before the committee looking into the leaked tape, claiming it was doctored and inaccurately represented the initial conversation with Bugri Naabu. He also acknowledged being unable to confirm certain facts.
“This tape that was played today, to me was an edited tape, I have not heard any unedited tape for me to talk about as I sit here.”
“The tape that I heard today, there are so many things in that tape that I don’t remember and there are so many things that we discussed that are not on the tape. I’ve met Bugri Naabu four times and we have discussed many things some of them private things that I am not ready to discuss in public
“I had a meeting with Bugri Naabu but I don’t remember having any plan to remove the IGP because I don’t remove IGPs.”
