Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, boasted about his influence in the current government, according to Superintendent George Asare, the third witness in the ongoing investigation into the alleged plot to assassinate the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
He claimed that Mr. Naabu had made a significant contribution to Dr. George Akuffo Dampare’s selection as Inspector General of Police.
Bugri Naabu allegedly stated that he recommended Dr. George Akuffo Dampare to the President prior to Dampare’s appointment as the IGP, according to Superintendent George Asare.
He claimed he spoke to Bugri Naabu because he thought he had influence over the appointment of an IGP when he testified before the Parliamentary Committee in Accra looking into the leaked tape.
Superintendent George Asare added that he had recommended COP Alex Mensah for the position of IGP in anticipation that Bugri Naabu would use his position to persuade the President to make the appointment. However, Bugri Naabu’s remarks had changed his mind.
He explained, “When we met him, in the course of our conversation, he did indicate that he recommended the current IGP to the President.”
Bugri Naabu was accused of fabricating allegations against Superintendent Asare as well.
Supt. George Asare testified before the committee on Monday, September 4, claiming that some of the remarks that have been attributed to him and recorded on the tape were actually created by Bugri Naabu and not by him.
He asserted that he went to Mr. Naabu’s office at his invitation after learning that the government was looking for a new IGP and asking him for recommendations from the former NPP northern regional chairman.
Bugri Naabu had alleged that Supt. George Asare introduced Superintendent Gyebi for the purposes of going to see the President Nana Akufo-Addo after the tape got leaked.
In his response, Supt. George Asare stated emphatically that Chief Bugri Naabu lied against him. According to him, he would even love to meet President Nana Akufo-Addo himself if he has any issue, take a photography with the president and hang it in his hall.
