    John Robert Isner, born on April 26, 1985, in Greensboro, North Carolina, is a former American professional tennis player. At 6 feet 10 inches (2.08 meters) tall and weighing 108 kilograms, he stood out not just for his towering height but also for his impressive tennis skills.

    Early Beginnings

    Isner’s tennis journey began at the age of 9, but it wasn’t until he turned 11 that he started taking the sport seriously. His talent quickly became evident, and he played for Walter Hines Page Senior High School, where he contributed to a state championship win in 2001. Even at a young age, he participated in significant junior tournaments, including the 2002 US Open and the 2002 Orange Bowl, where he showcased his potential.

    College Dominance

    Upon graduating from high school in 2003, Isner became a sought-after prospect and was recruited by the University of Georgia Bulldogs. His college career was nothing short of spectacular. He boasted a remarkable win-loss record of 143–28 in singles and 140–27 in doubles. His accomplishments included winning the 2005 NCAA doubles title and leading his team to victory in the 2007 team event against Illinois. In 2007, he reached the NCAA singles finals, ultimately losing to Somdev Devvarman of Virginia.

    Professional Ascent

    Isner concluded his college career in 2007, turning professional and embarking on a journey that would see him rise through the ranks of the tennis world. His towering height and powerful serves quickly made him a force to be reckoned with on the ATP Tour.

    Throughout his career, John Isner was known for his exceptional serves, earning him a reputation as one of the best servers in tennis history. He held the record for hitting the ATP’s fastest “official” serve, clocking in at an astounding 157.2 mph or 253 km/h during a 2016 Davis Cup match. Moreover, he holds the record for the most aces in the history of the ATP Tour, with an impressive tally of 14,470 as of August 31, 2023.

    ATP Rankings

    Isner’s dedication and skill allowed him to achieve remarkable rankings in the tennis world. He reached the world No. 8 position in singles and No. 14 in doubles, as recognized by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). His career-high singles ranking was reached in July 2018, thanks to his victory at the 2018 Miami Open and a semifinal appearance at the 2018 Wimbledon Championships. These achievements showcased his prowess on both hard and grass courts.

    The Marathon Match

    A defining moment in John Isner’s career came at the 2010 Wimbledon Championships when he participated in the longest professional tennis match in history. In a grueling battle that spanned three days, he defeated Nicolas Mahut in a five-set match that lasted a staggering 11 hours and 5 minutes. This match, with 183 games, will forever be etched in tennis history.

    Retirement
