COP George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), is not effectively running the police force, according to George Alex Mensah, the Director of Operations for the Ghana Police Service.

The fact that things are not going well under the current IGP is a well-kept secret among the top brass of the police service.

IGP Dampare’s leadership, according to COP Mensah, has caused a decline in morale among many police officers. He was speaking to a parliamentary select committee looking into a leaked tape of the IGP.

“Dampare is not managing the Police Service well and the majority of police officers are not happy. You can call the police officers underground and they will tell you,” COP Mensah told the committee on Thursday, August 31.

Even though he omitted to say which party he supports, COP Mensah acknowledged that he is a politician and that he works for a political party.

His remarks are similar to those made on a leaked recording in which he is heard telling Bugri Naabu that the IGP must be fired in order for the NPP to win the elections of 2024.

COP Mensah vehemently denied the tape’s veracity as well.

The former NPP Northern Regional Chairman, Bugri Naabu, was the subject of the conversation, according to him, but the recording was allegedly doctored and did not accurately capture what was said at the time.

During his appearance before the committee looking into the tape, COP Mensah made the allegation that some senior police officers could be heard discussing the removal of the IGP with the former Northern regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bugri Naabu.

In a related news, former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, has made additional revelations regarding the audio that was leaked in an effort to remove Dr. George Akuffo Dampare as Inspector General of Police.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was given the tape recording, according to Bugri Naabu, so he could hear it for himself.

When he appeared before the Parliamentary Ad-Hoc Committee, which was set up to look into the alleged plot against IGP Dampare, he made these facts known.

He named the two policemen as COP Mensah and Commander Asare.
