The Tamale District Court was attacked by some citizens of the Northern Regional capital on Monday, and this was denounced by the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG).

Three people were hurt, including a police officer, when the locals staged a riot at the court where a man who was allegedly acting as a drug supplier was on trial. They threw stones and damaged property, among other things.

According to earlier reports, the police had to shoot at the crowd to get it to disperse. 13 people had been detained, the police later said.

In a press release condemning the incident, JUSAG emphasized that justice is delivered in accordance with the law regardless of the parties involved and that the judiciary exists for all citizens, including Samuel Afotey Otu, the National President.

“We also wish to commend the Ghana Police Service for their swift intervention with reinforcement that saved the properties and lives of the Magistrates, Court Officials, Lawyers, Litigants and other court users during the sad event.”

“Whilst we send our well wishes to the injured police officer and other innocent victims, we wish to call on the Ghana Police Service to deal decisively with the thirteen (13) suspects arrested during the event in accordance with the law whilst efforts are made to apprehend the other suspects on the run,” parts of the statement read.

JUSAG urged all citizens to support the courts in their efforts to operate free from violence and intimidation.

Additionally, they made appeals to Tamale’s respected chiefs, religious and political authorities, as well as opinion leaders in the Northern Region, urging them to support the legal and security systems in their efforts to best serve the needs of the populace.
