After the World Cup in Qatar last year, the 27-year-old called it quits on representing his country after a falling out with manager Rigobert Song.
Onana made his 34th international start for Cameroon in their opening loss to Switzerland, but was benched for the team’s subsequent draw with Serbia due to a disagreement with his manager’s strategy.
Before his country’s final group match, in which they defeated Brazil but were unable to advance to the tournament’s knockout rounds, the goalkeeper was kicked out.
Onana has been named to a 24-man squad for the upcoming match against Burundi after not being named to an international team since his retirement.
Following this, it has been reported that authorities at Old Trafford are not happy about Onana’s recalling into the Cameroon and have instructed the player to snub his country.
Before signing Onana, Diogo Costa of Benfica was the favorite amongst shortlisted goalkeepers to replace David de Gea – but manager Erik ten Hag insisted and pushed for him instead.
However, it appears the concerns some board members of the club raised about the possibility of Onana’s absence during the January and February period in the Premier League have been vindicated after he was recalled into the national team.
On September 12, Cameroon will play Burundi in their final African Cup of Nations qualifying match. To advance to the championship game, Cameroon must win.
