The Ad-Hoc committee, which the parliament established to look into a plot to remove IGP George Akuffo Dampare, has heard several intriguing revelations from Daniel Bugri Naabu.
When senior police officers visited the former Northern Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to discuss their desire to have the Inspector-General of Police removed, he reportedly told them to go see Mallams to aid them spiritually.
On Monday, August 28, 2023, Bugri Naabu appeared before the committee assembled by the speaker of parliament to respond to inquiries regarding the widely circulated audio in which he was speaking with a few police commissioners.
He had previously stated that he and two other senior Police officers—Commander Asare and COP Mensah—were involved in the audio conversation that had been leaked.
The conversation, according to Bugri Naabu, took place in his office, which is located in Osu close to the Osu Police Station.
He disclosed that the two senior officers approached him with the intention of pushing for the IGP’s dismissal.
The officers’ explanation for this request was that Dr. George Akuffo-Damapre’sactionswere thought to be more closely aligned with those of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which could potentially harm the NPP’s chances of winning the upcoming general elections in 2024.
Bugri Naabu, who appeared before the Parliamentary Ad-Hoc Committee established to look into the alleged plot against the IGP, confirmed that he and two other senior police officers had the crucial conversation.
Earlier, Naabu denied being present at the meeting where Dampare’s removal was discussed in an interview with Kumasi-based Oyereba FM.
A contentious audio recording from a conversation between a purported top police officer and some individuals thought to be connected to the NPP about replacing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare surfaced in July of this year.
In a leaked audio that has gone viral, a politician who identified himself as Mensa and a police commissioner who described himself as the latter plot to have Dr. Dampare removed because the latter is too rigid and won’t allow the 2024 election to be rigged.
The Police Commissioner, who is rumored to be retiring, is heard telling the politician that the NPP should forget about winning the next general elections if the current IGP stays in office in the leaked audio, which was shared by GHone TV on its Twitter page.
In order to persuade the politician, Commissioner Mensa cited the strict security measures the IGP put in place during the recent Assin North by-election. He promised to take a similar or even more stringent approach, which might prevent the NPP from stealing the 2024 election.
