The New Patriotic Party (NPP), according to Nana Obiri Boahen, a former deputy general secretary of the party, has let Ghanaians down.

He claimed that the state of the economy will make the 2024 general elections very challenging for the governing party.

In order for the party to succeed in the general elections of 2024, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president, must be chosen as its leader, according to Nana Obiri Boahen.

He claims that given how difficult conditions are in the nation, Dr. Bawumia is the only candidate who can guide the party to victory in 2024.

He claimed in an interview with Peace FM that the party had fallen short of Ghanaians’ expectations before winning the 2016 elections and entering office in 2017.

“I am saying without any prejudice to the other candidates, that if NPP doesn’t take Bawumia into the election, the way things are hard and frustration and despondency is high…

“Plus, the fact that expectations of Ghanaians that they had in the NPP, in all honesty, we haven’t been able to meet it. Having said that, there is no need to compare NDC to the NPP in terms of governance. Doing so, is a mistake,” he added.

The NPP is looking for a flagbearer for the general elections in 2024. Five candidates will be chosen at a special delegates congress on August 26 who will then compete in a primary on November 4 to select Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’ successor.

In a related news, the NPP Ashanti Regional Constituency Chairmen claim they are about to choose a viable candidate for the party.

They contend that the contest is primarily about selecting a candidate who can help the NPP win the election next year and not about favoring members of the same tribe.

The Constituency Chairmen reiterated their support for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in a statement released yesterday. They claimed that the Vice President enjoys strong backing from the party’s grassroots, and that their decision to cast a sizable vote for him in the Super Delegates on Saturday was in line with that decision.
