Francis Asenso-Boakye, the minister of works and housing, has urged New Patriotic Party (NPP) members to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The Vice President’s selection to lead the party into the general elections of 2024, according to him, will demonstrate that the NPP is a party that appeals to all voters.
The Bantama MP thinks that choosing Dr. Bawumia as the NPP’s flagbearer contradicts the idea that the party represents the Akan people.
He implied that now is the time for the party to give members of other tribes the chance to lead in order to motivate party members who are not Akan to work hard.

Francis Asenso-Boakye stated in an interview with Oyerepa TV that Dr. Bawumia has been crucial to the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’ssuccessin gaining power and that it is now time for the delegates to honor him by electing him as the party’s flagbearer.
“I have said that within NPP now there is a good opportunity for us to send a strong signal to the rest of the world particularly Ghanaians, that the NPP is a mass party but not just, excuse me to say ‘Akan party’. So if someone works hard enough for the party to a certain extent and wants a position, we should send a strong signal that the person who is not an ‘Akan’ can also lead. That is why I am of the view that Dr. Bawumia will be a well-placed candidate for the party in 2024,” he said.
The NPP presidential primaries, scheduled for August and November 2023, would feature 10 candidates.
While the main primaries would be held in November 2023 to select the party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, a super delegate conference would be held in August 2023 to narrow the field of candidates to five.
