Ebenezer Abdul-Hakim Agetiba, a native of Zebilla, the capital of the Bawku West Municipality of the Upper East Region is the epitome of resilience and determination.

Master Agetiba is not only a delight to interact with but his self-confidence and intelligence are as reassuring as they are overpowering.

Born visually impaired nearly three decades ago, Ebenezer wouldn’t let that supposed ‘misfortune’ deter him from aiming for the very best and living a well-rounded life.

A genius at birth, he received his basic education at Wa Methodist School for the Blind under the aegis of Mr Samson Akurugu, that remarkable headmaster of that life-changing institution for persons with disability.

Brimming with leadership qualities, Master Agetiba served as Senior Prefect of the school, often impressing visitors with his thoughtful, well-delivered speeches.

Agetiba proceeded to the Wenchi Methodist Senior High School, one of the few integrated senior high schools in the country. He excelled there.

He gained admission to the University of Ghana and graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Political Science and Philosophy in 2020. He received the Vice Chancellor’s Academic Award for Best Graduating Student with Visual Impairment.

In 2021, the gifted and talented Agetiba was named as part of the Ghana Blind Sports Association goalball team that participated in the 2021 International Blind Sports Federation Goalball African Championship at the University of Cape Coast in the Central Region of Ghana.

In 2022, he gained admission to the University of Oxford, Somerville College, to study Msc African Studies as a Mastercard Foundation AfOx Scholar.

“A passionate and enthusiastic advocate for the power of mentorship to transform lives Ebenezer has served as a volunteer, helping students, particularly students with disability to realize their academic dreams through coaching and supporting with tuition.

Following his studies in Oxford Ebenezer aims to work for the social, political and economic inclusion of persons with disability in Ghanaian public and political life.

Alongside his interest in disability and representation Ebenezer is committed to working on peace and reconciliation in Northern Ghana, where there is violent interethnic conflict,” the biography on the oxford university website reads in part.

Mr Agetiba’s exploits are proof yet again that disability isn’t inability.
