On Tuesday, the suspects in the theft case involving Cecilia Dapaah’s home are anticipated to return to court.
Since the charge sheet was modified by police prosecutors on the Attorney General’s advice, this will be their second court appearance.
For their alleged involvement in the over $1 million and 300,000 Euros allegedly stolen from the home of the former Sanitation Minister, eight people have so far been charged with theft and conspiracy to steal.
Due to their nursing infants, two of the seven people charged with a crime were given bail; the other five were remanded in custody.
On August 8, seven of the eight defendants were presented in court; one is reportedly on the run.
Two housekeepers of the former minister and her husband, Daniel Osei Kuffour, are indicted by an Accra Circuit Court on charges of stealing millions of Ghanaian cedis’ worth of goods and sharing the loot with others.
On July 22, Madam Dapaah resigned in the wake of a public outcry.
On July 24, 2023, representatives from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) arrested the former minister and searched her home.
The OSP had disclosed that during the search, its officers had discovered a sizeable amount of US$590,000 and GHC2.730,000 in cash.
The OSP has also frozen her seven bank accounts.
Relatively, the Presiding Judge presiding over Cecilia Dapaah stolen money saga has set August 31, 2023 to give final verdict on Special Prosecutor’s application to freeze all assets belonging to the former Sanitation Minister.
Additionally, it follows the Special Prosecutor‘s motion for a court order freezing Cecilia Dapaah’s bank accounts.
Cecilia Dapaah, in the meantime, has characterized the special prosecutor’s application to confirm a freeze and seizure order against her properties as an effort to continue the arbitrary exercise of power based on false information and the ensuing media frenzy.
This was stated by her attorneys when they rejected the application on Thursday.
After hearing from both sides, the judge decided to postpone making a decision until August 31.
