AriseGhana, a pressure group, has declared its intention to picket outside the Bank of Ghana’s offices alongside the Minority in order to demand the resignation of Governor Dr. Ernest Addison and his appointees.
The controversy surrounding the building of the Central Bank’s new headquarters, which is said to have cost around $250 million, is at the heart of the group’s choice.
The Bank of Ghana (BoG) argued that its current headquarters, which was built in the 1960s, is no longer functional and thus justified the construction of a new one.
In a statement, AriseGhana claimed that the central bank’s mess was the reason behind their decision to join the picketing.
“After painstakingly studying the damning revelations contained in the 2022 Report and financial statements of the Bank of Ghana, we have come to the conclusion that the Central Bank is in the unprecedented mess it presently finds itself because of crass mismanagement by the Addison-led Board and management.”
In a series of demands, the NDC is protesting the cost of constructing the new structure at Ridge and calling for the resignation of the governor of the Bank and his two deputies.
AriseGhana is also concerned about the Bank’s 2021 and 2022 money printing, which it blamed on corruption and carelessness.
“We hold the view that the illegal printing of money by BoG in the year 2021 and 2022 to the tune of GH¢77 billion to finance the recklessness of the corrupt Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government, in flagrant disregard of section 30 of the BOG Act (as amended) is the height of irresponsibility and must be condemned by all well-meaning Ghanaians.”
The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has detailed the actual reason why the governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison is not ready to backdown on the new Bank of Ghana Headquarters project despite the several criticisms from Ghanaians.
In a related news, in a new investigation from the lawmaker, he said the project seeks to park about 3,200 cars and as well host about 6,500 people at a time.
“What does Addison need a new BoG head office which can host 6,500 people for? Why is Addison building a new BoG head office which parks a staggering 3,200 cars? Why exhibit this level of suicidal ostentation?” he questioned in a Facebook post.
