The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is said to have destooled Nana Saforo Koto, the Chief of Bekwai-Abodom.

According to media reports, the destoolment occurred as a result of the Bekwai-Abodom chief’s inability to establish his innocence in 20 cases involving claims that he participated in “galamsey” [illegal mining].

The locals charged the chief with selling plots of land to artisanal miners willingly and arbitrarily.

In addition, Nana Saforo Koto was charged with failing to care for his community for seven years, which led to him forgoing performing his customary rituals in the stool house as well as other duties.

The Bekwai-Abodomhene’s sub-chiefs have voiced their displeasure at his disregard for important traditional customs related to his position.

Otumfuo Kyeame Kwaku Owusu revealed during the Asanteman Traditional Council proceedings that the destooled Chief did not address all of the accusations made against him when given the chance to do so.

After hearing from the various divisional Chiefs, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II declared the embattled chief guilty of all the accusations and destooled him.

As part of efforts to stop the pollution of river bodies by illegal mining, several chiefs involved in such activities will be destooled if found guilty before the celebrations of the Asantehene’s 25th Anniversary.

Relatively, Antoa is a well-known town in Asanteman, and Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has commanded the destoolment of the chief there.

Over 20 years have passed since Nana Kwame Owusu Agyeman first sat on the throne. He has been charged with breaking protocol by appointing his nephew to succeed him while he is still alive.

The multiple sales of land are among the other offenses.

The Kumasi Traditional Council met on Monday, and the Otumfuo made his decision during that meeting.

The destoolment ceremonies begun in earnest.
