The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has served notice indicating that, the next NDC administration would deal with Governor of Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison, and Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta over a lot of breaches concerning the financial sector of the country.
He said the two persons would be arrested and prosecuted for breaching the law following Bank of Ghana’s decision to write off a GH¢80-billion debt owed it by Government.
Sammy Gyamfi, intimidated that the Governor, the Finance Minister and other persons involved in the violation of the laws, would be prosecuted when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assumes the reins of power, adding that there is no way the perpetrators of the violation can resist the law over their offence.
“The law is clear and its against such practice committed by these NPP top gurus at the Finance department. In 2021, you printed an amount of 35 billion cedis, and you loan it to government, they didn’t pay for it. And the law is clear that because they haven’t paid for it, the subsequent year, you can’t give them new money yet in breach of this, you printed another 45 billion cedis. When they (Bank of Ghana) were illegally printing money for government and we kept raising it, they released statements to insult us that we are liars meanwhile that was what they were doing.”
He added, “The law states clear that a person who contradicts this regulation under this act commits an offense and is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding 500 penalty unit, or for imprisonment to a period not exceeding two years. So when we talk about the criminals who are responsible for our economic mess, this what we mean. What they’ve done is an unpardonable crime against the laws of the country. Ofori-Atta and Addison are jail people walking free, I don’t see how these people can escape the full law of the country in the next NDC administration in 2025”.
The Bank of Ghana announced that it had written off GH¢80 billion of debt the Government owed it through the implementation of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme( DDEP). But the Minority in Parliament said that the debt could not be written off without parliamentary approval.
The Bank of Ghana has however explained that it did no wrong in writing off the debt.
