The New Patriotic Party (NPP) government under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been ordered to explain to Ghanaians why they deserve another term in office after the 2024 elections by Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante, a former chairman of the National Peace Council.
He also questioned the necessity of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regaining power.
Power has alternated between the NPP and NDC every eight years since the Fourth Republic’s inception in 1992.
Prior to the 2024 election, the NPP established a goal known as “breaking the 8” to end this curse by remaining in power.

Prof. Asante, however, contends that in order for the NPP to “break the 8,” the party must persuade Ghanaians to do so.
The former Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana said on JoyNews, “The NPP is currently ruling and you say you will break the 8. They need to tell Ghanaians why they should be allowed. We have the NDC also trying to come back. They believe because they have been in power before, they can come back again. They should also tell Ghanaians why they should be allowed to come back.”
Regarding the enormous promises politicians make to Ghanaians, Prof. Asante said it has become a habit for politicians in Ghana to make lofty and enticing commitments when they are aware that they cannot be kept.
He said “How do you promise that you will create a sea for the people of Ashanti Region when you know that is not possible? It is important to be truthful to the people.”
He urged the NPP and NDC to prioritize the interests of the country over those of their party.
Meanwhile, the Women’s Organizer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region’s Kumawu Constituency has been sacked.
Madam Akua Afriyie was fired for openly endorsing Alan Kojo Kyeremanten, a candidate for the party’s flagbearer position, who is a member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
