Lizzo accused of sexual harassment and weight-shaming - BBC News

Lizzo Faces Sexual Harassment Lawsuit by Former Backup Dancers

Grammy-winning singer Lizzo is facing a lawsuit from three of her former backup dancers, who have accused her of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment. The complaint, filed in a Los Angeles court, alleges that the dancers were subjected to a “sexually charged and uncomfortable” atmosphere, making their employment conditions unbearable. Let’s delve into the details of the lawsuit and its implications.

Allegations of Sexual Harassment and Hostile Work Environment

Dancers Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noelle Rodriguez claim that they experienced a hostile work environment while working with Lizzo. The allegations include being subjected to harassment that was “so severe or pervasive” that it made their work conditions intolerable. In a disturbing incident, Davis accused Lizzo of pressuring her into touching a nude performer’s breasts during a night club event in Amsterdam.

    Responsibility of Lizzo’s Production Company

Lizzo’s production company, Big Grrrl Big Touring, has also been named as a defendant in the lawsuit. The plaintiffs claim that Lizzo’s management team paid undue attention to one of the dancers’ weight gain, repeatedly yelled and cursed at performers, and invited them to events without disclosing that there would be nudity involved.

Termination of Employment and Workplace Confrontations

The lawsuit reveals that Williams was fired publicly by an agent of Lizzo following a workplace confrontation with the singer. Additionally, Davis was terminated after recording a meeting with Lizzo for feedback about a performance. This incident reportedly prompted Rodriguez to resign from her position.

Meeting Lizzo Through Reality TV Show

Two of the plaintiffs met Lizzo while competing on a reality TV show, where the prize was a chance to perform with her on tour. The third dancer was hired separately, and all three were associated with Lizzo from approximately spring 2021 to early summer 2023.

Lizzo’s Public Image Versus Alleged Behavior

The accusations levied against Lizzo seem to contradict her public image, which is rooted in self-love and body positivity. The singer, born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, has been vocal about social issues and has championed causes such as abortion rights, transgender rights, and anti-racism in the music industry. The allegations in the lawsuit raise questions about the disparity between her public persona and her actions behind the scenes.

    Seeking Compensation and Justice

The plaintiffs are seeking unspecified damages for unpaid wages, loss of earnings, and compensation for emotional distress, among other claims. Their attorney, Ron Zambrano, expressed surprise at how Lizzo and her management team treated their performers, stating that it appears to go against the values she stands for publicly.

As the lawsuit unfolds, it has brought attention to serious allegations against Lizzo and her production team. The case sheds light on the importance of addressing workplace harassment and ensuring that all employees, regardless of their profession, are treated with respect and dignity. For now, the legal proceedings will determine the outcome of this high-profile case.
