Controversial Ama Governor, a Ghanaian YouTuber and aspiring attorney, has responded to Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo‘s defense of the General Legal Council’s choice to suspend her call to the bar.

Despite passing all necessary tests, Ms. Ababio, also known as Ama Governor, had her call to the bar delayed as a result of a petition Hajia Siduri filed against her behavior.

In a speech on July 31 in Accra, the Chief Justice noted that exceptional moral character is a requirement for anyone who wishes to be admitted to the bar and expressed surprise at the public outcry over the GLC’s decision.

“When somebody has behaved in a certain way and we say we cannot call the person to the bar, I was surprised at the furore that rose up concerning the call to the bar of certain people and I thought, like seriously?

“This is proper conduct for the legal sector? That is interesting. So, for you to come into the space of the legal sector, your conduct cannot be obscene and offensive and you expect to be admitted, it doesn’t work like that. Your comments on social media, your ex parte communication for judge is extremely critical,” she cautioned.

Ama Governor responded to the ongoing controversy in-depth on Twitter by retweeting a video of the Chief Justice’s remarks and calling the ongoing citation of her case “cruel.”

She expressed her disappointment that the GLC waited until she had passed the bar exams to bring up any concerns they had with her conduct. Her suspension was put into effect five days before her call was expected.

The vlogger claimed that character assassination and the spread of false information had been used against her.

She asserted that any issues with her character ought to have been addressed earlier in the process if there were any.
