John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) nominee for president in 2024, has voiced concern over the rising rates of youth unemployment in the nation.
According to him, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo‘s administration has led to the highest level of unemployment in Ghana’s history.
Speaking at the Academic City University College’s commencement ceremony over the weekend, Mahama claimed that youth unemployment posed the greatest threat to Ghana’s stability and security.
He warned the graduates that there were no jobs ready to take them on and that it might take a long time to find suitable employment.
He claims that the current estimate of 13% unemployment in Ghana is the highest in recorded history. It’s a crisis in our economy.
Numerous jobs have been lost as a result of the cleaning up of the banking industry and the closure of local banks.
Mahama emphasized that with confidence and trust in leadership at an all-time low, Ghana’s democracy is in danger.
Speaking about the domestic debt exchange program run by the government of Ghana, he claimed that it had resulted in massive haircuts, eroding the capital of Ghanaian business owners, the income of middle-class families, and the savings of pensioners.
Relatively, to invest US$3 billion in an integrated ICT infrastructure, including onshore and offshore fiber superhighways and electronic applications, NDC is looking to partner with the private sector.
The investment, according to the party, will support other national priorities in the health, education, agriculture, petroleum, and the power sectors while advancing communication, commerce, civil liberties, and individual expression.
John Mahama, the party’s nominee for president in 2024, claims that the initiative will also improve service delivery to Ghanaians, modernize the economy and outmoded legacy platforms and IT systems, increase network security, and generate thousands of decent and long-lasting jobs throughout the value chain.
At the Academic City University College’s graduation ceremony, Mahama said that the next generation of STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) offers a holistic approach to learning, tearing down conventional silos and fostering interdisciplinary knowledge and skills.
In light of this, he tasked Academic City University College with finding additional ways to advance and publicize STEAM education, and he exhorted the graduates to adopt the virtues of grit, honesty, compassion, tenacity, and patriotism.
