Despite receiving high marks on her West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Jennifer Anaale Apingu, a brilliant graduate of the Navrongo Senior High School who represented her institution in the 2021 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), has since started selling alcohol in a bar in order to make ends meet.
On his birthday, renowned investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni brought her plight to the public’s attention in an effort to help her realize her dream of attending college.
He claims that Jennifer supported herself through her senior high school education by working as a head potter in the Ejisu market.
Despite earning 5 As, 2 Bs, and a C, he claims that Jennifer is handicapped and cannot afford to attend college.

“If you ever bought goods at the Ejisu market in early 2021, it is possible this young girl was the head porter (kayayo) who helped you carry your load to your vehicle or destination. That’s the work she did to support her education in senior high school and still made the grades you see in this picture.
“Jennifer Anaale Apingu is an exceptionally brilliant girl who is currently working at a drinking spot in Navrongo to survive. Her chances of going to school are slim despite her great academic performance,” the post was made by Manasseh on Facebook on July 27, 2023.
Jennifer has applied to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Development Studies (UDS), he continued, but her chances of enrolling successfully, even if any of the institutions grant her admission, appear slim due to a lack of financial support.
Many Ghanaians have responded to Manasseh’s plea for assistance, with some promising to lend a hand in small ways and others urging charitable governmental and nongovernmental organizations to assist the gifted but struggling student.
