The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has detained a personal assistant and receptionist of Daniel Bugri Naabu – former Northern Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for questioning.
The former Chairman told Kwesi Parker Wilson of Oyerepa TV that he suspects his employees were arrested in connection with the audio that was leaked about an alleged attempt to remove Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
“My personal aide, SK, and my receptionist also called Akua left in the morning that they were going to the office. I came to the office and I couldn’t find them. I started calling them because I got scared but to no avail. I’ve just been informed that they are both at the NIB office at Kawukudi junction. They were picked up while they were on their way to the office. I was told they came with a white car and pushed them into the car and whisked them away.”
He added, “I’m appealing to you [the media] and calling some lawyers to get this resolved. I don’t know why they were picked up. The whole of this week, the tape issue came up, but I’ve not spoken about it. I don’t want trouble. Some people are saying that it has a connection with the tape.”
He emphasized that he did not take part in the conspiracy and that the people criticizing the IGP should be confronted, not him.
The persons, according to Mr. Naabu, were only complaining about certain things in the party that were going wrong because he was a senior member of the party as he recalled the occurrence that sparked the discussions on the scheme.
Meanwhile, the former Northern Regional Chairman said he was ready to honour any invitation by parliament, adding that he was ready to tell the truth because he did not like to tell lies.
About the tape
A supposed conversation between Bugri Naabu and a Police Commissioner named COP Mensah was heard in the leaked recording that has gone viral since last week.
According to the tape, there was a scheme to have Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the IGP, removed in order to rig the next general elections.
In the clip, the Police Commissioner claims that the IGP won’t let the NPP rig the 2024 elections and calls on the President to fire him.
