Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko, a candidate for the position of flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has hinted that some of his rivals in the flagbearership race number eight are opposed to vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s candidacy and will support a different candidate in the event of a runoff.
He stressed that the eight of them regularly communicate and will probably decide as a group to vote against Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia when the chance arises while speaking on Citi TV’s Point of View program on Monday.
“Let’s not prejudge what will happen. But my suspicion is yes, we the eight aspirants in constant touch will support one candidate other than Dr Bawumia,” he acknowledged that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the establishment candidate.
Many analysts believe that the eight are working together to support Alan Kyeremanten, the other front-runner in the race, in order to prevent Dr. Bawumia from winning.
Ten NPP members have submitted nominations to run in the as-yet-unheld presidential primaries.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Trade Ministers Alan Kyerematen and Kwadwo Poku, Energy Expert Joe Ghartey, Attorney General and Minister of Justice Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Offinso North Dr. Kofi Kona.
The move, according to the Vice President’s aide and private attorney Akbar Yussif Rohullah Khomeini, is defeatist and shows that the Vice President is in charge and therefore cannot be stopped.
“The Bawumia mass movement is unstoppable! Boakye Agyarko is saying that 8 candidates have started talking about the possibility of uniting against the Vice President.”
“We have been aware of three such meetings at a location in Accra. A defeatist approach,” Dr. Bawumia supporter and attorney Akbar Yussif Rohullah Khomeini responded on social media.
