Deputy National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kweku Boahen has said that Members of Parliament of both NPP and NDC party were afraid of losing their seats if they opposed the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.
Kweku Boahen speaking in a panel discussion on UTV, stated that ahead of the 2024 general elections, MPs were scared of standing against the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
Kweku Boahen added that the MPs proved that all the allegations that NPP were doing everything possible to win Assin North by-election in order to vote against the anti-LGBTQ+ bill are all false.
The 275 members of Parliament unanimously agreed to pass the anti-LGBTQ bill that is currently before the chamber.
This comes after the 36-page document was subjected to months of public discussion and approval by legislators and stakeholders following its introduction in 2021.
The contested legislation has already been the target of several legal challenges; the most recent lawsuit was only made public on Tuesday, July 4, 2023.
However, Speaker Alban Bagbin declared that it is evident that no lawmaker is opposed to the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2022, and that the laying of the bill and the subsequent debate before the consideration stage are approved.
“With the submissions just made by the Honorable Andy Appiah Kubi that all the 275 are in support of the bill, anybody who disagrees be on your feet and I will recognize you.
“Honorable members, since all members are in support of the bill, I am definitely not going to gag the House. I will give you the opportunity to expand and improve further the submissions made so that at the consideration stage, it will be enriched by your contributions.”
