On Tuesday, June 27, 2023, James Gyakye Quayson was sworn in formally as the Member of Parliament for Assin North following his resounding victory in the by-election.

After the Supreme Court ruled on May 17, 2023, that Quayson had been wrongfully elected and must be disqualified from holding the office of MP, he was re-elected.

Assin North’s elected representative, he steps into his position and is prepared to serve the community.

Quayson defeated Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who received 12,630 votes, or 42.15 percent of the total votes cast, and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), who received 87 votes, or 0.29 percent of the total votes cast.

The Minority in Parliament, however, has vowed to skip any votes in the House of Commons on days when James Gyakye Quayson is scheduled to testify in court regarding a pending criminal case against him.

The entire Minority caucus will accompany Gyakye Quayson to court on those specific days, according to Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson, and will abstain from taking part in House business.

Earlier on, we reported that former President, John Dramani Mahama and his 2020 presidential running-mate Prof. Naana Opoku Agyeman arrived at Parliament to witness the swearing-in of newly elected Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, administered the oath of office to James Gyakye Quayson, the newly elected representative for Assin North, today, Tuesday, July 4, 2023.

In a short video sighted by InsightNewsgh.com shared by JoyNews on Twitter, Mahama and Prof. Naana Opoku Agyeman were captured entering the Parliament House to support Gyakye Quayson.

Officials from the Electoral Commission noted that the voter turnout was extremely high at 74.23%.

He is currently being prosecuted by the Attorney-General’s Office on forgery and perjury charges.
