Asamoah Gyan, a legend in Ghana, has expressed his sincere gratitude for being honored on the floor of Parliament.
The 37-year-old claimed that after years of feeling disrespected, he is now starting to feel appreciated as a result of Parliament’s action.
On Tuesday, June 20, 2023, Gyan gave a speech at the 30th Afreximbank Annual Meeting in which he made his formal retirement announcement.
The former Sunderland and Stade Rennes forward retired from the match as Ghana’s second-most-capped player and all-time leading scorer with 51 goals.
He was then honored by the football community for his contributions to the game, and lawmakers took turns praising him for his accomplishments.
Asamoah Gyan stated that following the reception he received following the announcement of his retirement, his heart was now at peace.
“Before, I’d say I had not been celebrated enough, because there were lots of disrespect and I feel like I am one of those guys who put Ghana on the map, the masses can confirm that but seeing what went on in Parliament, I am now beginning to understand, I’m beginning to feel appreciated by Ghanaians,” Asamoah Gyan said, as quoted by Myjoyonline.
“I don’t really care about what people say but Parliament has confirmed and I’m sure the masses also know in their heart that I should be celebrated. I always say the numbers don’t lie.”
Gyan last appeared for the national team in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), more than four years prior to his retirement.
