Today, voters in the Central Region’s Assin North Constituency will choose a new member of parliament.
The by-election was scheduled for June by the Electoral Commission (EC).
27 after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate James Gyakye Quayson’s victory in the 2020 parliamentary election was declared invalid.
The Supreme Court ruled that Mr. Quayson had dual citizenship at the time he submitted his nomination paperwork, and it subsequently ordered Parliament to remove his name from its records.
James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) are the three contenders for the position.
In related news, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged Assin North residents to vote against James Quayson of the NDC.
Voting for Mr. Quayson, according to him, would be a waste of time because he would probably be charged with perjury.
In an effort to increase support for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate in the Assin North by-election scheduled for Tuesday, June 27, he made the statement.
Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of making informed decisions when addressing a sizable crowd of Assin North residents.
“It is crucial for us to exercise our voting rights responsibly,” the President stated firmly. “We should not support or vote for individuals who are entangled in legal controversies that may eventually lead them to face imprisonment.
“We need someone who can come and help you. Someone who will work in your interest. I heard Gyakye Quayson say that even in prison, you people will vote for him, can he work from jail? We vote for people to go to Parliament to work, how can he work from prison so don’t vote for someone who will end up in jail, vote for someone who can work to improve your lives.”
Due to the legal difficulties that James Gyakye-Quayson, the district’s former representative, had to deal with, there has been political unrest in the area.
