The deputy minister for energy, Andrew Agyapa Mercer, has declared his conviction that James Gyakye Quayson, the former representative for Assin North, will serve time in prison.
He predicted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) member who is currently facing charges of perjury would be found guilty.
Agyapa Mercer said in an interview on TV3 in Accra that Gyakye Quayson committed a crime and that there is no question in his mind that he would go to prison.
“This gentleman who is taking the NDC’s abuse willingly, violated the statutory declaration, saying that he owed no allegiance to any other country.
“And I hear some argument to the effect that the man had tendered his application to the Canadian authorities, really and that is exculpatory. Are we serious?”
The Sekondi-based Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister of Energy, added, “What kind of joke is this? What kind of joke is this? The law is clear on this… He had another citizenship other than Ghana… he is going to jail.”
The High Court decided that James Gyakye Quayson’s perjury and forgery trial would begin on a daily basis on Tuesday, June 20, 2023.
This comes after Quayson’s attorney Justin Terriwajjah’s request to have the trial continued after the Assin North by-election scheduled for June 27, 2023 was denied by the court presided over by Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh.
In a related news, addressing some NDC faithfuls, Mahama described the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) as ‘masters of parading lies.’
The presidential candidate for the NDC urged the people of Assin North never to pay heed to the campaign messages of NPP who claim the electorates shouldn’t vote for James Gyakye because he will soon be jailed.
However, the former president assured the people that James Gyakye will never go to prison today or tomorrow.
