In the Assin North bye-elections, voters in the Central Region must punish the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In the 2020 parliamentary election, the party fielded an unqualified candidate, which Nana Akomea claims must be paid for because it stifled development in the constituency.

Prior to the by-election on June 27, 2023, the managing director of State Transport Company (STC) spoke on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programe on Friday.

Four parliamentary candidates have submitted their nomination papers to run in the bye-election, so everything is set.

Balloting has also come to an end, with Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) choosing the top position.

Sefanu Bernice Enyonam, a candidate for the Liberal Party of Ghana, was chosen second, and James Gyakye Quayson, a candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was chosen third.

The fourth name on the ballot is Abaidoo Agartha, an independent candidate.

The NPP and the NDC, however, have recently stepped up their campaigns in a number of communities.

Mr. Quayson, the NDC candidate, does not merit a second chance at being elected to the House, according to Mr. Akomea.

Even more concerning, he claimed, is the NDC’s dishonest campaign in Assin North, which it is running to win the elections.

According to the STC leader, if the opposition party’s candidate Charles Owusu wins the bye-election, the NPP will legalize LGBTQI in Ghana.

“Gyakye Quayson was irresponsible so the people of Assin North should not vote for him based on sympathy. They must punish NDC,” he opined.

Mr. Akomea pleaded with the electorate to make the best choice for their future over political sentiments.

Meanwhile, according to the report, Opoku is also clearing electricity tariff arrears owed by the people he visits.

“Charles Opoku is registering the constituents to the National Health Insurance Scheme. Aside from that his campaign team is moving from house to house and if you owe electricity tariffs, they will pay it for you,” the UTV Central Regional correspondent, Ibrahim Dadzie, said in Twi.

If the NPP candidate’s actions are accurate, it is unclear whether they constitute vote buying.
