The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Kingsford Alban Sumana Bagbin has said the 2024 general election will be a face off between Former President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
According to the Speaker, the two major parties namely the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will both contest with candidates from the northern part of the country for the first time in the history of the Fourth Republic.
Bagbin made this projection during a courtesy call on the Overlord of Gonja, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunutu Jewu Soale, at his residence in Damongo.
Speaking to the Overlord and his subjects, the Speaker stressed that the northern region should be ready for development and exhorted the populace to get ready for it.
“This is the time that the two main parties in Ghana are both deciding that the flagbearers will be our sons from the North. What I plead with all of you is for us to accept our differences and see how we can come together to prepare to receive the development that is coming our way. So the legacy projects we will do so be prepared to receive them when we bring them, multiply them and make sure that generations unborn will benefit from that,” he stated.
The NDC have already elected former President John Mahama as their flagbearer with an over 90 percentage margin. However, 10 persons are eyeing to be flagbearer of the governing party NPP.
They include Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; a former Trade and Industry Minister, John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen; new entrant and MP for Assin Central Kennedy Ohene Agyapong; a former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie-Akoto; a former Minister of Energy, Boakye Agyarko; a former Minster for Railway Development, Joe Ghartey; a former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong; a former MP for Mampong, Francis Addai Nimoh, A Senior Lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba(UEW), Eric Sakyi Nketiah and a former MP for Offinso North constituency and Minister for Regional Cooperation and NEPAD, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku.
