The Daily Searchlight’s editor-in-chief, Kenneth Kwabena Agyei Kuranchie, has sued former president John Dramani Mahama in the Supreme Court.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer’s eligibility to run in the general elections of 2024 is being contested by the seasoned journalist.
Mr. Kuranchie is requesting a declaration that Article 66 (1) of the 1992 Constitution, when properly and truthfully interpreted, clearly states that the length of a presidential term is four years.
A statement that, according to a true and proper interpretation of Articles 66(1) and (2) of the 1992 Constitution, a candidate for the presidency must already be in office.
An affirmation that a former president of Ghana is ineligible to run for office in Ghana based on a true and proper interpretation of Article 62 of the 1992 Constitution.
Former president John Agyekum Kufuor and Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin have joined the lawsuit.
In accordance with Mr. Kuranchie’s request, the court should direct the Speaker of Parliament to use and put into effect Article 68 (2) of the 1992 Constitution.
Additionally, he requests that the court halt Mr. Mahama’s efforts to run for president.
In other news, the Special Prosecutor has issued a wanted statement for Charles Bissue, a former secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM).
Days prior, the Office of the Special Prosecutor obtained a court order authorizing his arrest.
After Mr. Bissue declined the Special Prosecutor’s invitation last month, this order was obtained.
The former Presidential staffer’s attorney has insisted that his client will not surrender despite the directive.
A court on Monday, at the request of Mr. Bissue’s attorney, postponed a case until July 4.
The OSP claims that Mr. Bissue’s attorney informed the court that he was “so ill that he cannot stand and talk.”
To prevent the OSP from prosecuting him in connection with his membership in the former IMCIM, Mr. Bissue was going to file an application for an injunction.
As a result of Charles Bissue’s failure to accept subsequent invitations from the OSP, the office has requested his arrest.
