Using the Ghana Card, more than 28 million mobile SIM cards have been successfully registered, according to the Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.
In a statement to Parliament on June 8, 2023, she stated that the start of the registration process on October 1, 2021, would go a long way toward assisting in the development and construction of a SIM database with integrity.
She also stated that the re-registration would help in reducing fraudulent activities and securing SIM card-based transactions.
She said “Mr. Speaker, so far, 28,948,142 SIMs have been fully registered while 999,419 have been exempted and so the total active SIMs are 29,947,561.”
She allayed the concerns of customers whose SIM cards had been disabled.
According to Ursula Owusu, telecommunications companies are working with the Bank of Ghana to ensure that customers with mobile money funds in their accounts can get those funds back.
She reassured the affected customers that while they won’t be able to use their deactivated SIMs for mobile transactions, their funds would still be recovered using the proper procedures.
The only document that can be used to complete the registration process is the National Identification Card, also known as the Ghana Card.
However, the NCA repeatedly extended the registration deadline until May 31, 2023, which was announced as the final deadline, due to some issues with obtaining the Ghana Card.
A total of 7.4 million mobile money accounts holding GH200 million have been deactivated for not being registered.
