In order to defeat his closest rival, Freeman Amoah-Kyei, who received 136 votes, Charles Opoku received 397 votes.
Charles Opoku promised to patch up party rifts in the district during his acceptance speech in order to ensure that the NPP wins the upcoming by-election for the Assin North parliamentary seat.
The NPP is ready to keep the parliamentary seat, according to the party’s leadership, and will launch a serious campaign before the by-election.
The Supreme Court unanimously decided to order Parliament to remove James Gyakye Quayson’s name from the rolls of parliamentarians.
The Court ruled on May 17, 2023, that Mr. Gyakye Quayson’s election as the MP for Assin North was unconstitutional because he had dual citizenship at the time he filed to run in the 2020 elections.
After the Cape Coast High Court invalidated Mr. Quayson’s election as the MP for Assin North in July 2021, a resident of Assin Bereku in the Central region, Michael Ankomah Nimfa, dragged Mr. Quayson before the court to prevent him from holding himself out as an MP.
Relatively, prior to the Assin North by-election, Sammy Gyamfi, the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) communications officer, expressed hope for the party.
In the upcoming election, he predicted that Assin North voters will support James Gyakye Quayson, a candidate for the NDC in parliament, and justice.
The NDC Communication Officer expressed his confidence that the NDC candidate will win the by-election in a statement on the full Supreme Court decision, which was released on Monday, June 5, 2023.
