When Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi showed up in court on May 31, 2023, the Asokore Mampong District Court in the Ashanti Region charged him with murder.
The Police Inspector is on trial for allegedly killing Victoria Dapaah, his girlfriend.
On April 20, 2023, at Adum, a short distance from her home, 26-year-old Victoria Dapaah, also known as Maa Adwoa, was allegedly shot by her boyfriend, Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi.
During his initial court appearance, the suspect admitted to carrying out the act but insisted that it was not deliberate.
However, on his second court appearance, Inspector Ahmed Twumasi was formally charged with murder after the prosecution received guidance from the Attorney General’s office.
Family members of the deceased who were present during the court proceedings were given assurances by the head of legal and prosecutions in the Ashanti Region, ACP Kofi Blagodzi, that the police administration is committed to seeing that justice is served in the case because the office of the Attorney General has given its advice and the committal procedures will start during the next hearing.
The case has been postponed until a later time so that additional research and evidence can be gathered.
Community members are outraged by the incident, and many are demanding that justice be done. Domestic abuse and violence have increased over the past few years, and this case emphasizes the need for increased awareness and action to stop such tragedies from happening.
ACP Kofi Blagodzi said the following to the media after the court proceedings:
“This is a very difficult moment. But as I indicated, now that the advice has come, we shall proceed with the trial. The police have taken a serious interest [in this case]. We are taking very much interest in this matter. The IGP wants to deliver, and the police have also delivered. We have given full assurance that this matter will travel to its last minute’’.
