The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is preparing to run in yet another by-election, which will cause the political scene in the nation to heat up once more.
This time, the Central Region’s Assin North is the scene of the conflict. There, candidates are still vying for a parliamentary seat in the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling that James Gyakye Quayson’s election as a Member of Parliament (MP) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was invalid.
Alban S.K. Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, has not yet declared the seat vacant, but the NPP, which is savoring its victory in the Kumawu by-election election, says it is not taking any chances.
In anticipation of the Electoral Commission’s decision to hold another by-election in the region, the ruling party says it is getting ready for the election.
Given the significant stakes, it is anticipated that both major parties will exert every effort to win the seat.
Particularly the NPP appears to be taking the fight seriously as Justin Kodua Frimpong, the General Secretary, and Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organiser, both arrived in Assin North yesterday ahead of the elections.
Along with others, the two NPP gurus had just returned from Kumawu, where they had successfully defended the party’s seat.
Kwesi Amankwaa of the National Democratic Congress and the other two independent candidates were defeated by Ernest Yaw Anim, who received 15,264 votes.
Kwesi Amankwaa of the NDC received 3,723 votes, compared to Kwaku Duah (1)’s 2,478 votes and the other Kwaku Duah’s 62 votes.
The Supreme Court ruled last week that James Gyakye Quayson‘s election was unconstitutional.
A seven-member Supreme Court panel unanimously decided to order Parliament to remove Mr. Quayson’s name from its records.
