Ernest Yaw Anim, a candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been proclaimed the winner of the Kumawu by-election by the Ghanaian Electoral Commission (EC).
In order to defeat Kwesi Amankwah of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the other two Independent Candidates, Mr. Yaw Anim received 15,264 votes.
Kwesi Amankwah of the NDC received 3,723 votes, compared to Kwaku Duah (1)’s 2,478 votes and the other Kwaku Duah’s 62 votes.
Prior to the by-election, NPP And NDC’s top leaders have stepped up their efforts to ensure that their candidate wins the seat as the hotly anticipated by-election in Kumawu is about to take place.
The seat was being sought after by the two major political parties, NPP and NDC.
In the by-election on Tuesday, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo urged residents of the Kumawu constituency to cast a sizable number of ballots in favor of the NPP’s parliamentary candidate.
President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia are persuading delegates to support their party’s candidate, while former President John Dramani Mahama is arguing forcefully for the NDC.
In addition, the two independent contestants have vowed to pull a surprise.
On Sunday, May 21, 2023, Kumawu was the site of a politically charged rally organized by the NPP.
The President, who endorsed Ernest Yaw Anim, urged the voters to support him in a speech at the NPP’s final rally in the district on Sunday, May 21.
“The replacement for Philip Basoah is handsome, humble, and kind-hearted and is ready to serve you. He has united all members of the party in this constituency. Ernest Yaw Anim deserves to do the job. He’s number one on the ballot paper, place your thumb on where you see him, we don’t want any deceptive candidate“.
The Vice President praised the NPP’s accomplishments and warned the electorate about the projects they would miss if they supported the NDC candidate.
“Vote for the NPP’s candidate to go to parliament to bring development to the constituency. The NDC should know that we haven’t forgotten the dumsor era. Do you want us to experience dumsor again?” he asked.
