Today, May 23, 2023, voters in the Kumawu constituency will cast ballots in a by-election to choose a successor to their late representative, Philip Basoah, who passed away in March.

The election was scheduled for May 23, 2023 by the Ghanaian Electoral Commission in accordance with Article 112(5) of the Constitution as amended.

This morning heavy police presence has been spotted on grounds to ensure peace and order as voters in Kumawu prepare themselves for the much-anticipated by-election.

Earlier on, the Police assured that they are ready to maintain law and order at today’s by-election in the Kumawu Constituency.

“The Ghana Police Service will like to assure the public that sufficient measures have been put in place to maintain law and order as well as ensure peace and security before, during and after the Kumawu Constituency by-election,” a statement signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, said.

According to the statement, enough police officers had been sent to Kumawu and the other communities in the constituency to assist the local police in securing the election.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and one independent candidate were engaged by the Police this morning as part of the security arrangement to improve cooperation among all stakeholders toward a peaceful election, according to the statement.

The other independent candidate, according to the statement, was unable to accept the invitation to the meeting.

According to the statement, the National Chairman and General Secretary of the NPP led the team, whereas the General Secretary and National Organiser of the NDC led the team. The Independent candidate spoke for himself at the meeting.

It gave residents of the Kumawu Constituency the assurance that they could go about their daily lives freely, including exercising their civic duty to vote.

“We would also like to urge the public, especially the people of the Kumawu Constituency to work with us to deliver a peaceful election and ensure the safety and security of all,” the statement added.
