The Northumberland Football League has named Joshua Twasam, the first child of the late Christian Atsu, player of the year.

The nine-year-old plays for the Gosforth Football Club’s youth team and is the eldest son of the late former football player.

Joshua has begun a career in football, following in the footsteps of his father, and most recently assisted his team in winning the Pro Motiv8 competition.

Children can play football on a platform provided by the Northumberland Football League, which oversees Mini Soccer & Youth leagues and initiatives in England.

The governing body in charge of these leagues and initiatives in the historic county of Northumberland is the Northumberland Football Association.

Joshua’s mother, Marie-Claire Rupio, shared a photo of her son holding the championship trophy earlier this year when he won the Pro Motiv8 competition.

Joshua Twasam will make his father proud, Marie-Claire wrote in the caption of the picture, adding that many of her followers also wished him luck in his football career.

On February 18, 2023, Atsu’s death was officially declared after his lifeless body was discovered after the earthquake in Turkey.

After the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria in mid-February, there had been days of active search.

Numerous people sent their condolences to the football player’s family and loved ones as tributes poured in from near and far.

On Friday, March 17, 2022, the former winger for Chelsea and Newcastle United was buried in his native Ada.

Meanwhile, in local news, following a 5-1 thrashing of Hears of Oak on Sunday afternoon at the Accra Sports Stadium, Medeama SC surpassed Hears of Oak to take the top spot in the Ghana Premier League standings.

Following Aduana’s blunder on Saturday, the Yellow and Mauves, who narrowly lost in the previous match, were in position to earn all three points and shoot up the table.
