The National Democratic Congress (NDC) intends to hold presidential and parliamentary primaries, but the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has given notice that it will not oversee those elections.

According to the EC, this is because of the legal problems that have plagued the primaries scheduled for May 13, 2023.

The EC chairperson claims that the decision was made to avoid the commission being found in contempt.

“In order that we are not cited for contempt, the Commission has taken the decision not to supervise the conduct of the Presidential and Parliamentary elections until after the determination of the case by the court,” citinewsroom.com quoted Jean Mensah during a meeting held on Wednesday, May 10.

Dr. Kwabena Duffour has filed an interlocutory injunction to prevent the NDC’s scheduled presidential and parliamentary primaries, which are only 4 days away.

The General Secretary of the NDC, the Director of the Elections Directorate, as well as rivals for the position of flagbearer John Dramani Mahama and Kojo Bonsu were all specifically named as respondents in the lawsuit.

The defendants must enter their appearance within eight days of being served with the court documents, according to the writ.

The writ further stated that if the order was not followed, a judgment could be rendered without further notice and in their absence.

The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) planned elections for president and parliament, according to Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the party’s national chairman, will proceed as planned.

Nothing, in his opinion, will prevent the elections, and he urged anyone with complaints to speak with the party leadership in order to have them resolved.

Relatively, Dr. Kofi Kukubor, a policy analyst for Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, has disputed statements made by Mustapha Gbande, the deputy general secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), that all concerns raised by his team have been addressed.

Dr. Kukubor claimed that the party leadership has not consulted with his team about the incomplete voter register during an appearance on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen show.

He revealed that his team is drafting an order prohibiting the presidential primary process.
