Kotoku Royals of the Ghanaian Premier League will officially be the first team demoted in the 2022–2023 campaign.

After losing two-nil to Accra Great Olympics at Sogakope yesterday, the Akim Oda-based club met this end.

In the 44th and 55th minutes, respectively, Great Olympics’ Michael Osei and Isaac Mensah both scored goals.

Kotoku Royals needed a victory to increase their chances of surviving, but the loss meant that their time in Ghana’s top division was over.

The team is currently 15 points away from playoff safety with four games left to play. They will still place last in the table even if they win all of their remaining games.

Kotoku Royals’ relegation comes as a huge disappointment to the Eastern region’s football fans, who had hoped to see more of their home clubs compete in the top division following the club’s promotion last season.

The club recently attributed their poor Premier League performance to politicians’ broken promises.

The Honourable Yaw Osafo Marfo, Honourable Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, and other Special Advisors to the President had pledged to assist them in bringing the Oda Sports Stadium up to Premier League standards.

“When we qualified for Premier League, a section of Members of Parliament [mentioned names], [promised to help complete our stadium],” he told Radio Gold.

“They all met the team in Accra and had lunch with us then after that, they promised us that if it is only left with just a month to kick off the BetPawa Premier League, they will make sure that they will make the stadium to the standard of the Premier League level for us to play our matches at the Oda Sports Stadium.”

Despite being in week 29 of the league, Kotoku Royals have not been able to play any games at the Oda Sports Stadium as promised.
