Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, vice president, has declared his intention to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the general elections of 2024.
The Vice President made this announcement in a meeting with the majority caucus in Parliament behind closed doors, according to a report by Accra-based Citi FM.
The majority of NPP MPs supported the Vice President’s action at the meeting on Tuesday night.
Dr. Bawumia is widely regarded as the favorite to succeed President Akufo-Addo in 2024, but he will face opposition from Alan Kyeremanteng, a three-time candidate who resigned in January of this year to concentrate on his bid for the presidency.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Dr. Mustapha Hamid, reaffirmed his support for him and stated that there is no doubt that Dr. Bawumia will serve as the flagbearer.
Dr. Hamid claimed in a report by MyNewGh that all the other candidates are aware that the Vice President has been selected.
“Well, I back Dr Bawumia. He’s going to win the NPP primaries. There is absolutely no doubt about it. Oh yeah! It’s done. I am sure the others [ aspirants to the flagbearer position] know. But it’s a competition so it’s okay for them to show up,” he said confidently.
Former trade minister Alan Kyeremanten, former NPP general secretary Kwabena Agyapong, independent MP Kennedy Ohene Agyepong, and former agriculture minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto are other candidates for the position of flagbearer. Dr. Hamid claims that each of these people is aware that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will win the competition. He believes that Dr. Bawumia is the best candidate to lead the NPP due to his outstanding performance as Vice President and other attributes.
The NPP will choose a presidential candidate for the 2024 elections on November 4, 2023. Nine candidates have already declared their intent to lead the party.
