The National Cathedral project should be transformed into a national hospital, the Trades Union Congress has urged the government.

The TUC suggests that government direct extra funds from non-essential spending toward the growth of productive ventures, opening up opportunities for employment.

The theme of the May Day parade in 2023 is: “Protecting incomes and pensions in an era of economic crisis: Our responsibility.”

The TUC Secretary-General, Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah, said that turning the cathedral project into a hospital will better serve Ghanaians while speaking at the 2023 May Day parade in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.

“We have to change the situation ourselves as Ghanaians. We believe strongly that government can lead us out of this crisis, and the government can do so by cutting expenditure on non-essentials including the need to stop spending our hard-earned revenue on a national cathedral.”

“The president has always said he wants to create another Notre Dame in Ghana so we can attract a lot of visitors but we disagree. Comrades, it will be better to convert the project into a national hospital,”

In light of the state of the economy, the TUC also demanded that the government reduce the size of its administration.

In a related news, Nana Akufo-Addo is confident that his administration is continuously working to revive the faltering economy.

The President assured that the government is assiduously working with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to win board approval for Ghana’s $3 billion bailout to address the current economic crisis during his speech at the May Day celebration in Bolgatanga.

“We continue to work tirelessly to complete all prior actions required to present Ghana’s request to the IMF’s integrity board for approval. We have also made substantial progress on the debt exchange program as well as our engagements with bilateral creditors to secure the financing required for the IMF program,” President Akufo-Addo said.
