The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has revealed that relocation efforts for Ghanaian students from Sudan’s war-torn country are well under way.
The students will be evacuated to nearby Ethiopia, according to Dr. Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, the deputy minister of foreign affairs.
“We have so far accounted for all the Ghanaian students. They are 73; none of them has been harmed, and we have all of them safe in a place. The next batch of Ghanaians is three footballers in Sudan. We have also accounted for them and have put all of them together. The plan is to evacuate them to the nearest country which is Ethiopia”, he said.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration declared earlier this week that it was prepared to evacuate Ghanaian nationals caught up in the conflict in Sudan.
The Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have been engaged in a deadly conflict that has claimed avoidable lives over the past week.
Students in particular have been impacted by the conflict, but according to Ghana’s Honorary Consulate in Khartoum, all of its citizens are safe.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, the Ghana Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, which also holds concurrent accreditation with Sudan, is coordinating the evacuation of Ghanaian nationals to ensure their safe passage to Ethiopia in close coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.
As a result of a deadly conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes in Sudan.
The violence has been centered in Khartoum, with civilians suffering disproportionately.
