The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has the support of Dr. Mustapha Hamid, Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the general elections of 2024.
He claimed there was no question the Vice President would be chosen as the party’s flagbearer.
Dr. Mustapha Hamid claimed in a report by MyNewGh that all the other candidates are aware that the Vice President has been selected.
“Well, I back Dr Bawumia. He’s going to win the NPP primaries. There is absolutely no doubt about it. Oh yeah! It’s done. I am sure the others [ aspirants to the flagbearer position] know. But it’s a competition so it’s okay for them to show up,” he said confidently.
Former trade minister Alan Kyeremanten, former NPP general secretary Kwabena Agyapong, independent MP Kennedy Ohene Agyepong, and former agriculture minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto are other candidates for the position of flagbearer. Dr. Hamid claims that each of these people is aware that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will win the competition. He believes that Dr. Bawumia is the best candidate to lead the NPP due to his outstanding performance as Vice President and other attributes.
“First of all, he is arguably the most active Vice President we have had in this Fourth Republic…You would agree that this is the Vice President who has been in the forefront of policy and who has not just taken a back seat as Vice President but who is in the forefront of implementing stuff,” he added.
The support of Dr. Mustapha Hamid for the Vice President joins the numerous others from other NPP leaders.
Over 100 Members of Parliament (MPs) in the NPP, according to First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Joe Osei-Owusu, support Dr. Bawumia.
In an interview with Oyerepa TV, Joewise, also known as Joseph Osei-Owusu, claimed to be one of the more than 100 MPs who are backing Dr. Bawumia for president.
“Most of the NPP MPs at the last count were about 118 MPs and I am one of them. I speak for myself and my support for Bawumia, and I know over 100 NPP MPs also support Bawumia,” he told the morning show host of Kumasi-based Oyerepa TV, Kwesi Parker-Wilson.
The majority of the presidential candidates have already begun their own campaigns, he continued, so expressing his support for Bawumia does not go against the party’s ban on active campaigning.
