Kwaku Duah, an independent candidate in the Kumawu by-election, has stated that if elected as the constituency’s Member of Parliament, he will maintain his independence and make decisions that are best for his constituents and Ghana.
Due to what he believed to be unfair treatment, the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) member ran as an independent in the 2020 parliamentary elections.
Mr. Duah claimed he received 11,698 votes in that election, compared to the late Philip Basoah of the NPP, who received 14,960 votes overall.
Given this context, he is confident that the Kumawu parliamentary elections will be a breeze.
“If you compare the votes the independent person had in the 2020 election with the NPP candidate, it tells you that, something went on that the electorate didn’t like” he said in an interview on Adom FM’s Current Affairs Show, Burning Issues.
Should he win the elections, Mr. Duah also declared that he would not join either the Minority or Majority caucus in Parliament.
“If a win this election, I will not join any of the caucus. My seat will place in the middle of the House and when it comes to decision making, I will make sure I make right decisions that will favour my constituency and Ghana” he stated.
Jonathan Asante Otchere, a political analyst at the University of Ghana, is cautioning the NPP not to take the upcoming by-election lightly.
Although Kumawu is a stronghold of the NPP, he pointed out that the current economic difficulties and the government’s failure to address issues in the constituency may have an impact on voters.
Relatively, Kennedy Agyapong revealed the part he played in helping the party win the majority in Parliament.
Before the party won the majority, he claimed, he had to pay a debt of one million Ghana cedis owed by the then-Constituency Chairman of Fomena.
Speaking to NPP delegates in Tema, Ken Agyapong claimed that it was only through his intervention and the donation of GH1 million that Asiamah Amoako’s condition, which led to his joining the NPP in the House, was fulfilled. Asiamah Amoako is currently the second deputy speaker of parliament.
