The Kumawu by-election will be held on May 23, according to the Ghanaian Electoral Commission.
Nominations will be accepted at the Commission’s Setwere Kumawu District Office from May 2 through May 5, 2023, between the hours of 9:00 am and 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm, respectively.
The New Patriotic Party has approved six candidates for the Kumawu constituency to run for the position.
Prior to the Kumawu by-election, the NPP has set Sunday, April 23, 2023, as the date for choosing a candidate.
Dr. Aboagye Dacosta, the present director of health promotion at Ghana Health Services (GHS), Opanyin Yaw Baah, the former Kumawu MP, Obaapa Ama Serwaa, Ernest Anim, Dr. Philip Yaw Barnor, Edward Kofi Osei, Kwame Appiah Kubi, and Owusu Bempah are the candidates who have chosen to run on the NPP ticket.
After Philip Basoah, the district’s member of parliament, passed away, the Kumawu seat became vacant.
He passed away at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital at the age of 53.
He was rumored to have attended House proceedings in Parliament a week earlier.
“This is so tragic. Hon. Basoah you were so active just last week in Parliament,” tweeted colleague MP Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor.
“Very calm & focused yet very active, especially on the Public Accounts Committee where you & I serve. Fare thee well, my brother. My deepest condolences to your family & Constituents. You served well.”
Before the legislature left for its break on Friday, March 31, Speaker Bagbin declared the position vacant and informed the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) that preparations had begun for holding a bye-election for constituents.
