George Mensah Britton, Camidoh’s manager, has expressed optimism that his artist will be a serious contender for the Artiste of the Year honor at the 24th annual Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs).
“We’re expecting nothing but success on the night” of the VGMAs, he said.
“For him to be nominated in that [Artiste of the Year] category means it’s a possible win,” he also said. However, even if the ‘Sugarcane’ hitmaker does not win, Mr Britton sees the nomination as “a big leap.”
In an interview with Nana Kwesi Asare on Class 91.3 FM’s “The Big Show,” Britton claimed that Black Sherif is Camidoh’s only rival in the category.
For the Artiste of the Year category of the 2023 VGMAs, “If I’ll actually be honest,” he said, “I think the only competition there [for Camidoh] will probably be Black Sherif.”
The songwriter of “Kwaku the Traveller” is the only person George Britton sees “anybody like that [in the category]” being trouble for his artiste.
Given that Camidoh was an undiscovered artist just two years ago, Britton added that he thought the singer-songwriter’s nomination alone was a noteworthy accomplishment.
He praised Camidoh for his dedication to his craft and hard work, which led to his success.
“two years ago an underground artiste but has over the period,” worked his way to the top, with “a lot invested in him.”
While stating that all of the Artiste of the Year nominees are worthy, Britton specifically mentioned Black Sherif as Camidoh’s main rival. None of the other candidates in the category, in his opinion, pose a serious threat to Camidoh’s chances of winning.
“Everyone there [in the category] deserves to win,” especially since they have “been counted as the top guys in the country within a period…”
Camidoh is also nominated for five additional VGMAs honors, including Best Male Vocal Performance, Best Afrobeats Song, Best International Collaboration, and Vodafone Most Popular Song of the Year.
The Accra International Conference Centre’s Grand Arena will host the awards ceremony on Saturday, May 13, 2023.
