The Kumawu Constituency has been declared vacant by Speaker of the House Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.

Following the passing of MP Philip Basoah, this has happened.

Philip Basoah died on Tuesday, March 28 after a short illness.

He was rumored to have attended House proceedings in Parliament a week earlier.

“This is so tragic. Hon. Basoah you were so active just last week in Parliament,” tweeted colleague MP Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor.

“Very calm & focused yet very active, especially on the Public Accounts Committee where you & I serve. Fare thee well, my brother. My deepest condolences to your family & Constituents. You served well.”

Before the legislature left for its break on Friday, March 31, Speaker Bagbin declared the position vacant and informed the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) that preparations had begun for holding a bye-election for constituents.

Meanwhile, according to Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, the ranking member of the Parliament’s Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, the committee’s report on the Proper Human Sexual Rights & Ghanaian Family Values Bill, also known as the Anti-LGBTQI Bill, was laid before Parliament.

He expressed hope that the report would be discussed and approved today, March 31.

This will make room for the Anti-LGBTQI Bill’s consideration.

“Join us and pray for us,” on Friday, the South Dayi member of parliament tweeted.

Prior to that, Bernard Ahiafor, a higher ranking member of the committee, gave Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin the assurance that no one would be able to stop the committee from working on the Anti-LGBTQI bill.

Mr. Ahiafo claimed that because he is a lawyer and a man of unquenchable spirit, he cannot be intimidated by anyone.

In an interview with TV3’s Komla Kluste on March 29, he stated that the committee is prepared to take the Bill’s second reading if it is scheduled by the Business Committee.
