The bereaved family rejected the casket, causing the son-in-law, who had thought he had done his best to purchase a casket for his deceased mother-in-law’s burial,to experience unspeakable humiliation.

On March 30, 2023, at Tombo Mbatie in the Benue State of Nigeria’s Buruku local government area, a bizarre incident is said to have occurred.

Bem Raphael Aondongu, a Facebook user, revealed the news on the social media platform and stated that it is customary for the first female child to provide a coffin for the burial of her parents.

“As the TIV tradition demands, when a mother or a father dies, the first female child who is married is saddled with the responsibility to make provision for a casket for the burial of any of the deceased parents,” Aondongu wrote on his Facebook page.

The grieving first daughter of the deceased woman worked with her husband to purchase a coffin for her burial in order to uphold this custom. However, their efforts fell short of what the family had hoped for.

“The first female child in conjunction with her husband who is a son-in-law to the deceased mother, tried as he could to bring this casket in the pictures below but only to be rejected,” the poster revealed.

The poster claimed that the family did not accept the coffin because it was inappropriate for their deceased relative and shared images of the coffin that had been rejected.

“According to the family of the deceased, they said the casket isn’t beautiful and too poor to bury a member of their family.”

Aondongu, who chose to keep the identity of the family in question private, polled his followers on how the deceased’s son-in-law was treated.
